Dreams of Solar power for the house

May 28, 2008

It’s something I’d really like to do someday… but it’s just too expensive at the moment and I don’t have enough disposable income to justify the extra costs — yet.  Maybe someday… (hopefully soon).

Here’s a great article by Lloyd Case who documented the bid process and installation of home solar panels for his house in California…

Garden Day 0

May 19, 2008

Today we loaded up the garden with a series of seeds.  It’s been a while since we’ve been able to grow some vegetables.  The time demands of 3 kids made it very tough to take care of a garden.  I think they’re old enough to begin helping to take care of it… we’ll see.

Thomas “helped me” plant the garden.  First we took new soil and topped off the garden area. For some reason, the amount of soil we started with seems to have dropped by about 4 or 5 inches over the past 6 years.  Maybe it was settling.  Maybe it was the chipmunk that lives in our garden.

Anyway, we planted 4 crops…

  • Corn
  • Bell peppers
  • Green beans
  • Bok choy

We’ll see how well we do…  :-)

Community Sponsored Agriculture

May 16, 2008

I was on a flight back from New York today and decided to take a look at the in-flight magazine.  I read an intriguing article about Community Sponsored Agriculture (CSA).  CSA’s are an arrangement with a local farm in which several people pay for a “share” of the crop (distributed every week).  The farm gets the cash to support the farm and grow food organically (although I suppose that’s not technically a requirement) and the customers get a bunch of ultra fresh veggies, herbs, and maybe some fruit and fresh flowers.  By the time I heard about this, I was way too late… all shares were reserved.  Count me in for 2009!
