There are websites that allow one to sell their photos to whoever wants to use them. I think I’ll try a different strategy… Free use for the photos I have that are less than a certain size… maybe 300×300 resolution. Larger sizes come with a small fee… $10 maybe, for unlimited use. I suppose I’ll actually implement this someday. In the meantime, it’s just thinking out loud.

The Best Licorice…
March 30, 2007
The best licorice (or if you prefer liqorice) I discovered on my recent trip to Australia. It’s a brand called Darrell Lea. My favorite is absolutely, the Strawberry Soft Licorice. I can buy it in the US from this distributor, MyBrands, but it’s not cheap. It’s actually cheaper at Amazon.com. Overseas it was about half the cost!
So here’s my rankings of the best licorice…
- Darrell Lea Strawberry Soft Licorice (they’re #1 for a reason)
- Red Vines (after eating a ton of these, you know they aren’t very good for you)
- Harry and David’s Filled Red Licorice (very addictive)
- Twizzlers (my college standard… good, but too greasy)
- (no others are even worth mentioning)

“Open” Business model?
March 30, 2007An idea, I wanted to blog about. For whatever reason, I get ALOT of people who contact me wanting to know the ins and outs of Shoebox Memories. They want to do something similar in their home town and want my advice on tools, capabilities, etc. In the future, I could modify my business to be an “open model” with the goal being to help drive adoption of Linux. When I can figure out how to run 100% of the business on Linux applications, I can make this happen. Mainly I need the DVD authoring and Video editing tools to be improved significantly.
All the “how-to’s” would be published openly… as long as one uses Linux as the platform. The community could contribute and grow around it. I could have links from my webpage to others who are “dedicated” to Linux in this fashion as well. I could offer training and starter materials (templates and experience) as premium services. Training could be delivered remotely with Linux based technologies.
Maybe some day…

Online Linux Training
March 30, 2007I can’t really plug these guys on my work blog, plus I haven’t used them personally so I really have no reason to plug them in the first place. However, I just ran across their website and thought they had a very cool business model. Kudos to them!

I just found about this application… Looks very cool! I can’t wait to try it out. I’ll have to write a “first impressions” when I get a chance.

I’ve got Vonage… now what?
March 27, 2007http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=4726&tag=nl.e622
Should I be worried? Is it time to switch? Unfortunately, I don’t have much choice when it comes to a business-quality line — Vonage or Verizon POTS. I’d rather not give my $ to the crappy company known as Verizon… but I may be running out of choices.

Al Gore Makes His Case to Congress
March 22, 2007Thanks for speaking up, Al… for all of us.
He’s getting a lot of flack for his personal use. Clearly a political BS scheme. What have YOU (the reader) done to help with the problem of global warming? For starters, I’m actively changing all the lightbulbs I can in my house to be compact-fluorescents. 8 down, several more to go. We have a lot of “non-standard” light fixtures, so that’s posing a problem.
I hear from others that they can’t just broadly change all their lightbulbs. They’re waiting for the ones they have to burn out before they change them. Let me propose an alternative…
MY IDEA:
Skip your morning Starbucks once a month (hey, I’m a shareholder) — only ONE time a month! Instead, spend that $4 or $5 to buy a compact fluorescent lightbulb and install it. Afraid of wasting that “good” lightbulb? You probably spent less than $2 on that lightbulb… it’s not as if the existing lightbulb is really valuable. In this small way, you can help fix global warming by reducing your energy usage.
Read a little more on CFL’s (compact fluorescent lightbulbs) here and here.

Cut and Paste – hot water
March 6, 2007It happened again.
Someone cut and paste from my website and didn’t get rid of all the evidence. This time, someone copied my Shoebox Memories site almost word-for-word and forgot to change the links to PayPal. More specifically, they copied my order form and my website about slide shows… then called my number (because they forgot to remove it from the HTML code) and expected me to help. It’s crazy! It’s a definite violation of my copyrights!!!
I would love to get some kind of retribution on people like this… It’s happened at least 4 or 5 times since I started Shoebox Memories in 2003. I don’t know what I can really do however. Any suggestions??
For starters, here’s the proof…
My order forms (see page 2) and website…
Screenshot of their website: (this is my proof/evidence)
It gets worse… their actual order form (an alternate link) is REMARKABLY similar to my order form!!!
Who are these violators of my copyrights??? Treasured Moments, based in South Dakota… http://www.treasuredmomentsslideshows.com/

Please don’t do business with them, at least until they get some original content on their own website…
